June 4th, 2007 <!–Lolo–>
A friend of mine is having a going away party tonight. She got a great job in NYC, and they want her there immediately! Good news for her, but bad news for us here in Boston!
The party is also a Knit Night, so I thought I’d bring some appropriately decorated cupcakes. This was my first time working with marzipan, and what fun it is! Like, four hours of fun.
Speaking of the party, I gotta go! Forgive my lack of words; I hope I can make up for it with the ridiculous amount of photos!

Your FIRST time working with marzipan?! A natural! This must be the sweetest, and most thoughtful, cupcakes I’ve ever seen.
For the balls of yarn, did you just wrap tubes of marzipan around a ball of it?

Glorious, show stopping creativity is in those cupcakes. Your father is just here looking at the monitor with a quirky smile on his face. He knows what a cupcake is; he is not sure what a blog is. As for me, I think my cupcake runneth over with pride. Congratulations on a cupcake coup, Lolo. We love you. Mom

69. cecillouise | June 6th, 2007 at 8:27 am

Amazing!!! -
70. Frank | June 6th, 2007 at 9:48 am
WOW! Those are so cute. Can I ask how you did the knit texture? Super job!
-
71. kbsalazar | June 6th, 2007 at 11:34 am
I’ve got to ask. I can figure out how you did the yarn balls and the selvage edges. But I’m still noodling on how you did the knitted texture.
From the longitudinally striped scarves, it looks like you arranged a bunch of strands side by side, then drew a line down the center of each one with a pointy object. Then you filled in the angled cross hatching to make the stitch-like look. But it’s all so even, and there’s no over-run of the center lines (damned difficult if you’re drawing three lines independently).
Did you have an arrow-shaped sharp form that you pressed in repeatedly to make the stitch shapes? Or did you do all the cross hatching first, then drew the longitudinal lines in, distorting the cross hatches to make them stitch-like? And if you did so - how warm was the marzipan when you were working with it, and what proportion of sugar did it contain? (I’ve never been able to get that level of detailing without crumbling).
In any case - even if you keep your secrets into the beyond - Envy. Admiration. Both. -k.
